Step-by-Step Acrylic Painting Tutorial | Easy Painting Idea for Abstract Art

I show how to use a large flat brush to apply colourful brushstrokes. This application method is an easy painting idea for abstract art. I use purples and oranges in this step-by-step acrylic painting tutorial. Be creative and come up with your own color palette!

TECHNIQUE:
Squeeze several colors of soft body acrylic paint into a disposable bowl and dip the flat brush to apply several colors at once onto the canvas.

Painting Lesson | Acrylic Paints on Canvas Step-by-Step Painting Tutorial: Daisies

In this painting lesson video, I’ll show you step-by-step how to paint an abstract version of the daisies with acrylic paints on canvas. Simply order the materials I used, download my photos, and follow my steps and method. I’ve included the list of materials and the link to my photos in the description below. Follow me on Instagram and tag your painting of the daisies. I’d love to see it!

Let’s get started!

STEP 1:
Set up your painting area. I covered the wall and floor of my painting area with plastic drop cloth and set the canvas on a portable easel. If you don’t have an easel, use a chair or box to prop up your canvas. I’ll be painting on a 36×48 inch gallery profile canvas. Feel free to paint on a smaller canvas.

STEP 2:
Arrange your materials. I used the plastic the canvas was packaged in to protect this table. I layed out all the paints, brushes, palette knives, and disposable bowls for mixing. I’ll be using the Liquitex Soft Body Acrylic Essentials Set of 12 colors. Since I use a lot of titanium white and light yellow, I have big bottles for both. These materials are listed in the description below.

STEP 3:
Clean your canvas. I use a big flat brush to sweep the canvas and remove dust, fabric fibers, and any fuzz.

STEP 4:
Ground your painting. The underpainting is three monochromatic concentric circles. I dilute the acrylic paint with water and apply a thin layer of light grey around the edges. I use different ratios of white and black to create medium grey, and dark grey.

STEP 5:
Have fun painting! First, I apply several shades and tints of grey brushstrokes. Next, I mix green with white and black to create a muted, pastel green. I keep mixing different shades and tints of green. Note that I apply all brushstrokes in a circular manner.

COLOR THEORY:
Understanding the basics of color theory is important! I explain what hues, shades, tints, and tones are in the description below. https://99designs.com/blog/tips/the-7-step-guide-to-understanding-color-theory/

STEP 6:
Add the final layer of brushstrokes. This layer is the most satisfying layer to paint. All the previous layers built a stage for the final brushstrokes to shine on! In this layer, I focus on defining the focal point and visual path. I paint the daisies with pure titanium white. And I use a couple tints of yellow to create the centers.

METHOD:
Spraying paint. Spraying paint adds texture and contributes to the expressive style of the painting. Here, I’m using a round brush to spray grey.

METHOD:
Splashes of very diluted acrylic paint. I added water into an empty bottle of titanium white and mixed it. Here, I’m pouring the very diluted paint right onto the canvas. Making splashes.

METHOD:
Squeeze paint directly out of the bottle. I squeeze light yellow straight out of the bottle to make the centers of the daisies three dimensional. Then I squeeze titanium white directly out of the bottle to outline some of the petals and highlight them more. A few last squeezes …and the painting is finished!

LIST OF MATERIALS:
• 36×48 inch gallery profile canvas (feel free to paint on a smaller canvas): https://www.dickblick.com/items/07027-0127/
• Easel (alternatively use a chair or box to prop up your canvas)
• Liquitex Soft Body Acrylic Essentials Set of 12 colors: https://www.dickblick.com/items/00616-1079/
• Titanium white: https://www.dickblick.com/items/00616-1107/ (a smaller bottle will be enough for this project)
• Light yellow: https://www.dickblick.com/items/00616-4611/ (the yellow in the set of 12 colors is enough for this project)
• Round brushes: https://www.dickblick.com/items/06280-1139/
• Flat brushes: https://www.dickblick.com/items/06280-1029/
• Palette knives: https://www.dickblick.com/products/richeson-plastic-painting-knives/
• Plastic drop cloth: https://www.dickblick.com/products/trimaco-supertuff-plastic-drop-cloth/
• Disposable bowls
• Masking tape

COLOR THEORY:

Hues = pure color

Painting Lesson | Acrylic Paints on Canvas: Lilacs and Yellow Flowers

In this painting lesson, I’ll show you step-by-step how to paint a floral composition of lilacs, yellow flowers, and leafs using acrylic paints on canvas. The style of the painting is a mix of abstract expressionism, pointillism, and impressionism.

I structured this painting lesson video so that you can follow along and paint your version of my reference photo. Simply order the materials I used and download my photo. I’ve included the list of materials and the link to my photo below. Follow me on Instagram and tag your painting of this flower bouquet.

I laid out all the paints, brushes, palette knives, and disposable bowls for mixing. I’ll be using the Liquitex Soft Body Acrylic Essentials Set of 12 colors. Since I use a lot of titanium white and light yellow, I have big bottles for both. These materials are listed in the description below.

STEP 3:
Ground your painting. I don’t want this first layer to be flat. That’s why I use the big flat brush to apply bold strokes that slightly vary in shade and thickness.

STEP 4:
Have fun painting! Using my reference photo, I start to create the floral composition of lilacs, yellow flowers, and leafs. I’m intentionally not trying to copy the composition 100%. My goal is to capture the *feeling* of the flower bouquet and express it in a more abstracted way. “I filter the image through my emotional lens.”

METHOD:
How to mix paints. I create different hues and then create at least 3 shades, tints, and tones of each hue. I challenge you to create as many distinct colors as you can!

Color Theory:
Understanding the basics of color theory is important! I explain what hues, shades, tints, and tones are below.

METHOD:
How to apply brushstrokes. Keep 3 things in mind: Thickness, size, and placement. I start out applying thinner and bigger brushstrokes. With each layer, my brushstrokes become thicker and smaller. This builds texture. I often paint in triplets – placing 3 shades of a color together. This unifies the colours and adds depth. I arrange about 50% of my brushstrokes in triplets. The rest are applied spontaneously.

METHOD:
Spray paint. Spraying paint adds texture and contributes to the expressive style of the painting. Here, I’m using a round brush to spray titanium white.

STEP 5:
Add the final layer of brushstrokes. This layer is the most satisfying layer to paint. All the previous layers built a stage for the final brushstrokes to shine on! In this layer, I focus on defining the focal point and visual path. In order to do that, I break away from the reference photo and change the composition slightly to create a stronger visual path.

METHOD:
Step back and look at the composition. Here you see how I apply brushstrokes and step back to look at the composition and then get closer again to keep painting. I do this repeatedly.

METHOD:
Squeeze paint directly out of the bottle. I had the feeling that the painting needed more texture in the focal point and visual path areas. So squeezing titanium white and light yellow straight out of the bottles felt like the right thing to do. I’m applying the last few drops. And the painting is finished!
