Let’s Talk About The First Tattoo Reality Shows

A Deep Dive into the very first Tattoo Reality TV Shows, their effect on the industry at large, and the birth of tattoo celebrities like Kat Von D and Ami James.
Become A Channel Member!

Miami Ink was the first tv show of its kind, based inside of a tattoo shop in Miami, it followed the lives of tattoo artists performing life long tattoos on clients that were made to help them overcome life’s obstacles and milestones through permanent custom tattoos. This blueprint went on to be the staple for two other reality tv shows of a similar nature, and from it came what is known at the ‘Miami Ink effect,’ and the creation of tattoo celebrities as we know it. I spent the last month watching probably a cool one hundred hours of these pop culture relics to see if they still stand up to the test of time. Hangout today and see a deep dive on Miami Ink, LA Ink, and NY Ink, the tattoo shows from 2005-2011 on TLC.

Q: The ability to create art, be it on canvas, with your voice, or as in this case, using fire and metal, is not easily learned. It is gift you are born with. What is learned is the skill with which you use the tools at your disposal. Ironboneyard is a product of the creative mind and physical skills of Eric Quezada – also known as “Q”, the owner and creative force behind the company. Eric was born the middle sibling of three brothers in Ventura California in 1971. As a child hespent hour after hour drawing and sculpting. His father had an art background and would always encourage him to use the talent he was given. His father had a lot of tools in the garage so his imagination would go wild creating latex masks, wood carvings, leather tooling and eventually airbrushing. He continued to paint and sculpt, but it had to take a back seat due to the economic conditions he found himself in. After graduation he enlisted in the army for two years and when he got out he moved to Phoenix. From there he moved around a lot, always trying to make a living by using his god given talents. From airbrushing cars to painting murals in Scottsdale, he had finally found a career that would support him. He got the chance to study marble carving in Italy and toured Europe for a few months – truly an unforgettable experience. As a very versatile artist he taught himself to weld and sculpt metal. He found a market in artsy restaurants and commercial building owners who were eager to buy his work. In June of 2011 he started his own company and is now the driving creative force behind Ironboneyard.

Tim Shelton: I’m a tattoo artist, painter, husband, reader, thinker and a wrestler of arms. I have lived in CA for most of my life and have been drawing since I was a child. I attended The Laguna College of Art and Design and graduated with a BA in Illustration. If you are inquiring about commissioned artwork please email me as well. “A Day in Negativity is 2 Days Wasted” – HOLSTEINtm

South Coast Tattoo Show Convention Coverage pt. 1 of 2

SullenTV covered the first annual South Coast Tattoo Expo in Costa Mesa, CA this year. Host Bernadette Macias caught up with a few of the attending artists such as Rich Pineda, Roman Abrego, Carl Grace and Poch! Check it out!

Music by: Matt Casket,,,,,,,,,

Rich Pineda BIO:
I got my start in tattooing through my friend Jeff Cooper in March of 2010. So I have been tattooing a relatively short time. I absolutely am in love with this art form over any I have done in the past. I have been getting tattooed since I was 15 and have loved it since then. I had a few friends that tattooed when I was growing up and one of them was my good friend Todd Townsend who was like a big brother to me. I always admired what a great artist he was as I was an artist myself and appreciated good work. I never thought that years later I would be an tattoo artist as well. I did the music thing most my life as well. I was in many bands last being Heart of Eros with my good friend Matt Ainsworth and still continue to make music today as well as Engineering and Recording at my home studio “The Underground Studio” Although I have been an artist as long as I can remember, and worked as an artist for many years working on custom automotive pain jobs as well as bikes, helmets, custom wood and metal works, and most art related fields. Making custom one off pieces is my favorite thing to do, I also love photography. If you would like to get some work get in touch with me through my contact page. R.

Roman Abrego is a seasoned tattoo artist specializing in portraits and color realism, Roman was introduced to tattooing at a young age when his uncle Jerry gave him his first tattoo machine. He features his talents worldwide and does guest spots at tattoo shops around the world. Family is central to Roman’s life, as he has two daughters. His unique experiences, professionally and personally, have more than prepared him for anything and everything that will come his way. He loves to do color portraits and bio mechanical or whatever else pops into his head. His shop is called Artistic Element (Yucaipa, CA) because “Before we were tattoo artists we were all artists and we bring that element into our tattoos.” He also owns Artistic Element 2 in Los Angeles, CA. Roman was honored with the Tattoo Society’s Artist of the Year Award in 2009 and 2010 and was featured on Best Ink.

Carl Grace is originally from LA. His artistic style was influenced early by a youth spent in placement homes, camps, jail, and prison. He began tattooing in 1998 with a tattoo apprenticeship under Boston John at Skin Grafix in Arcadia, California. Since 2009, Carl has attended over 100 tattoo conventions as an artist and has been a featured guest artist in many tattoo shops around the country. He won his first award at the Tucson Tattoo Exposition in 2010.

Poch: A world renowned artist known throughout the industry for his captivating images that immerse the mind, body, and soul in a fusion of unparalleled realism creates an unsurpassed visual presentation that takes hold of the imagination and leaves the viewer demanding for more. His keen eye for detail exemplifies the true meaning of talent; each work of art produced pushes the envelope and challenges others to match his skill. Poch excels in color, black & grey, pinup, and portrait. However, realism is the art form that Poch genuinely loves and incorporates in all of his pieces. His talent truly shines when he is allowed to tattoo without any constraints, transforming a basic idea into a realistic materpiece. Dedicating his life to his artwork, Poch has cemented his name in the industry as one of the frontrunners in realism as he constantly tests new approaches to advance his skills. Poch’s primary inspirations are his drive to make it in the tattoo industry and to create a name for himself. Artists that have committed themselves to the industry and constantly push art to the next level gives Poch a sense of determination and inspiration that far exceeds the norm. Tattooing is more than a profession for Poch, every image that he creates is an extension of himself. His devotion, permanently etched into the pieces he creates, resounds through every line. With his skills, dedication, and focus Poch will continue to strive for more and accept nothing but the best while he leaves the world wondering what stroke of genius he will achieve next.

Miami Ink: a tattoo studio with celebrity tattoo artists

Where else to discover celebrity tattoo artists than Miami Ink tattoo studio? We’re on the hunt for some of the best tattoos and tattoo art in the world at Miami Ink Tattoo Studio! We talk to a tattoo artist about his tattoo design ideas at the studio Ami James calls home – Love Hate Tattoo.

Our independent journalism wouldn’t be possible without donors like you. Every penny you give helps us create our award-winning, real-life stories. Thank you. You make it happen! Domenico, Giulia, Dea and Noah. One couple, two reporters, two baby – Founders of Kiss From The World Channel.

★ T R A I L E R ★
I’m Jose from ‘Love Hate Tattoos’, also known as ‘Miami Ink’ in Miami, Florida. We have the best staff, which includes resident artists and also rotating guest artists from all over the world.

We have Federico Ferroni, Morgwn Pennypacker, James Hamilton, Ami James, Tim Hendricks, Janos Masz, Darren Brass, Chris Garver and many more.

Basically Ami James and Chris Nunez decided to open up a shop in South Beach. They had all the experience, friends, and everyone’s support. What they were doing caught on like wild fire and they ended up with a TV show, but in the end they went back to tattooing.

We outgrew the original shop, so now it’s bigger and nicer. We got all the art on the walls and it’s much more comfortable and feels much more like home.

In the shop every artist has a station, and in the back we have a magic room, the drawing room where all the magic happens.

We do a ton of brainstorming so most of the drawings are not drawn just by one person. There’s always somebody there to kick back ideas with you.

Everything we do is custom drawn. We strongly suggest our clients to bring in their reference so it’s easier to get ideas on paper and make it what they want. People often pick right from our portfolios.

Tattooing is a very difficult art, the skin is constantly changing and everyone’s skin is different. Just about everyone could do a tattoo but not everyone can do a good tattoo.

Make sure you always ask for portfolios and look at people’s work.

We’re at ‘Love Hate Tattoos’, to interview the artists of the best temple of tattoos. The parlor is also known as ‘Miami Ink’, name of the American reality TV show which is filmed in the same place. It’s late afternoon.

A girl enters the parlor during the interview. She opens her tattoo portfolio very resolutely and shows it to one of the artists.

She works as a hostess for the British Airways. She just got here from London but she’s leaving again tomorrow. A quick break from work just to get the tattoo of her dreams. She pulls up her t-shirt and shows the artists where exactly she wants the tattoo.

The artists suggest the abdomen. Everything’s set in less than five minutes. The artists make a temporary tattoo and transfer it on her abdomen. The hostess looks at the tattoo in the mirror, she seems pleased.

She lies down on the bed. The needle starts injecting ink but she keeps a straight face, no visible signs of pain. She can stand the pain pretty well.

After almost two hours, the work of art is complete.

Tattoo Show TV Next Level Tattoos Costi episodul 10
