Portrait Painting Tutorial – The 5 Essential Shadows of a Portrait

In this portrait painting tutorial, realist painter Alex Tzavaras shows you how to place the 5 essential shadows of a portrait.

The 5 essential shadows of a portrait, the 2 eyesockets, the shadow under the nose, the upper lip and the shadow under the bottom lip are vitally important. Whenever you are drawing a portrait or portrait painting in oil, getting a likeness in a portrait depends on placing these 5 shadows accurately. You should have these shadows placed correctly before you start working on the refining stages of your portrait, or adding any details, because no amount of detailed work will make something look like your sitter if there is anything wrong with any of the 5 essential shadows.

In this alla prima oil painting tutorial, Alex domonstrates with a plaster cast how he uses centerlines to help him place the 5 essential shadows accurately. In addition to this oil painting demo, there is a full length version, filmed in real time, available to watch on Alex’s Patreon Cannel. You can also download a high-res reference image of this cast and have a go at this exercise yourselves, here:

Alex Tzavaras is a contemporary realist artist offering portrait painting and alla prima oil painting tutorials. Alex teaches the traditional painting techniques artists used to draw and paint from life up until the start of the 20th century.

Fine Art TV Series – Colour In Your Life
Season – 11
Episode – 09
Filmed on Location at – Tumbi Umbi, Australia

Born 1949 in Griffith, NSW, Australia and educated at Yanco Agricultural High School, Peter studied Medicine at the University of Sydney from 1966 to 1971 and after working at Royal North Shore Hospital and Canberra Hospital spent 34 years as a family doctor in General Practice at The Entrance on the Central Coast of NSW.

He changed to full-time art practice in 2008 and works as a professional portrait artist in Sydney and the Central Coast.

He has drawn and painted since early childhood and always regarded his art practice as a search for excellence that continues to this day. He has a special interest in the human condition which is manifest in his portraits and figurative works but he enjoys all forms of art from the totally abstract to the super real. He works in most media …pencil, pastel, charcoal, watercolour, oil, acrylic and does sculptural work in plaster or bronze.

In his realist paintings he aims to paint light and space making the flat canvas appear three dimensional. He strives to make his portraits life-like and alive so that the viewer feels the subject is actually present and he likes to see friends and relatives of the subject talking to the portrait.

He is available for portrait and other commissions in Sydney, Australia and worldwide and is willing to paint any subject . He is happy to paint still life’s with family heirlooms, religious subjects, history paintings, deceased persons from photographs and to paint any idea, fantasy or nightmare in collaboration with the person commissioning the work. For example, if you wanted to be painted as a subject in a Greek Myth, a king, a queen, a peasant, a saint, or have your own spiritual vision captured on canvas, it can be arranged.

You can contact the artist about their art or art techniques directly via the website

The Colour In Your Life TV series is an art show that takes you into the everyday studios of artists from around the world. Colour In Your Life is an Australian produced TV art show and website

Graeme Stevenson, a world renowned Artist himself, rides his Harley Davidson to the studios of Artists all over the world and allows the viewers a chance to go into the Art studios of some of the greatest Artists in the world.

A wonderfully engaging show that allows people to see inside the minds and the abilities of some of the most creative people in the world.
